klare sprache einstellen

As of June 1, 2022, ARD and ZDF will offer the additional audio track “Clear Language” in their main programs. This new accessibility feature is designed to make spoken content easier to understand, especially when there is a lot of background noise in movies or series. Here you will learn how to set Clear Speech.

What does “clear language” mean in the context of your TV?

“Clear speech” is a speech-optimized audio track that is additionally broadcast on certain TV channels.

With the “Clear speech” audio track, a technically processed audio signal is transmitted in addition to the stereo program sound of the current TV program, which enables better speech intelligibility. The “Klare Sprache” service was initially introduced in the HD programs Das Erste HD, NDR, WDR and rbb. From September, the HD programs of BR, hr, Radio Bremen, SWR, SR, tagesschau24, One and, from November, the HD program of mdr will be added.

Better speech intelligibility

In this additional audio track, background and side noises as well as music are reduced. As a result, everything that is spoken can automatically be understood more clearly.

The spoken word is additionally amplified and thus comes more to the fore. Viewers find this easier to understand.

However, your TV does not automatically select this new audio track, you have to do this yourself via the settings. Here in this article you will learn how.

Why is there “Clear Language” and who is it for?

The abundance of different TV sets and reception options makes it difficult to create predefined sound situations. The sound experience is also very subjective.

This means that at your home in your living room and on your TV set, a movie will sound acoustically different than the exact same movie at your neighbor’s in another living room and with a different TV set with different speakers and settings.

This often has a particularly negative effect on the understanding of spoken content.

However, age-related or health-related limitations in hearing can also severely impair the understanding of spoken language in the context of background noise.

How to set “Clear speech” on TV

The additional audio track “Clear speech” can be set via the remote control of the TV set in the audio menu.

In the audio menu, if available, you then also have the option of selecting the audio track “Clear speech” in addition to the previous selection “Original sound”, “Audio description” and “Multi-channel sound”.

Please note: The “Clear speech” sound channel may also be named differently depending on the manufacturer. For some manufacturers you will find the abbreviation “qks” or “mul”, for others you may also see a manufacturer’s own symbol. In some cases, only the language (deu) is displayed. If you cannot clearly identify the audio track based on the manufacturer’s information, in most cases the last or lowest audio track contains the “Clear speech” offer.
